Mālama ka ʻāina: Sustainability for a better FutureAloha and welcome St. Anthony Students, Staff, and 'Ohana. This week our topic at SAMS Weekly is "Mālama ka ʻāina" to take care and live in harmony with the land. Here in Hawai'i, we have a special responsibility to take care of the land in which nourishes our lives. A special thanks to Kumu Koa in helping us this week with her knowledge in 'Ōlelo Hawai'i a me nā loina Hawai'i. Hi my name is Jezziel A. and this weeks topic is Environment and Sustainability. Some ways we can practice keeping our campus clean is by always picking up trash that we see and not leaving it there. Another way we can help our campus stay clean is by eating all our food and not to waste it. We should all keep our campus clean because God teaches us how to respect his creations. Everyone should participate in keeping our campus clean because if birds eat plastic on the ground it can make them die or get really sick. When you participate in cleaning our campus you are helping the whole environment. When you help the environment you are helping God’s creation stay clean and not dirty. This is why you should always help our campus stay clean!!!!! Hi my name is Kaimana K. and I am from Ms.Rodriguez’s journalism class. It's important to keep the earth clean because it can protect wildlife and give us clean air to breath. It is also important to keep the earth clean because it reduces pollution. It also protects the extinction of endangered animals. A clean environment protects ecosystems and all life on earth so we should start cleaning up!!!! Keeping our environment clean is important because keeping our environment clean means that you are respecting god's creation. If you keep our environment clean its doesn't just affect the animals it affects us to. You can keep this environment clean by cleaning up beaches, parks, and your block. You could start cleaning up now by picking up trash at our school so we can have a clean school. Remember to pick up trash because it helps us to!!!!!!! Introductions: Jezziel A. & Kaimana K. (6th Grade) What's it all About?“MĀLAMA KA ʻĀINA’’ This week our theme is “MĀLAMA KA ʻĀINA.”In order to take care of our land or aina we must pick up our rubbish off the ground. We also have to clean our environment and plant more seeds. We also have to recycle bottles, batteries, cans and paper bags. We could use our bikes or walk to reduce the pollution. The cause of cars, burning things, and putting harmful chemicals in the air makes our air contaminated. We should respect the land and sustain the plant life in Maui so that our future generation is cleaner. Also so that our native plant species won’t be extinct. Did you know current rates of plant species extinction are estimated to be 100-1,000 times higher than those of the pre-human era? One in 5 plant species are currently threatened with extinction. Rare species are an important part of recent evidence-based approaches to biodiversity, analysis, prioritization and conservation. This means that rare plant species tell us how they live in these untouched areas. So we should improve our environment to have space to plant plants. Also in designated areas and in surrounding landscapes to protect, plant, and conserve nature. Reporters: Aubrey & William H. (6th Graders) SpotlightHi, my name is Joshua T. and today I will be spotlighting on a guest speaker to our class, Ms. Marisa. She is a recent graduate of University of Hawai’i at Manoa, as has since joined the Peace Corps as she is soon departing for her trip to Senegal, Africa. This week our topic is environment and sustainability. In our comic, we are going to talk about a man trying to cut down a tree. The tree is so scared that he runs away, but the man is chasing him still. This is what happen if you hurt the environment. Trees are so scared that they just want to run away from the places they live. Thank you for seeing our comic. We really hope that you like it, and hope you have a nice day. This comic is important to describe environmental sustainability because this happens to a lot of trees around the world. Trees are cut down so that we can make tissues, desks, pencils, and a lot more everyday items. Soon in the future, trees could be extinct and we might not have oxygen. Now it is the chance to change the world by not using that much tress, and being careful with out waste by recycling. What's Happening in Exploration? We're all having a blast, and exploring a variety of topics in our exploratory classes. Enjoy!
