Service Men and WomenEach day, we are blessed to be alive and to be surrounded by such beauty here on the island of Maui. We have many people to thank, including those who dedicate their lives in service to protect our freedom, and rights as American citizens. We all have connections to service men and women, whether is be a father, mother, aunty, or brother. We constantly hear about the impacts they have in our daily lives, and reflect on tragic events such as September 11th, and how they persevere to protect lives. We thank Senior Chief Emery Nelms who visited SAMS just last week after a 9 month deployment to share his experiences as a Submariner. Mahalo and welcome home Emery! Interview by Jaimelynn L. Senior Chief Emery Nelms: How long have you been in the Navy? I have been in the Navy for almost 16 years. Have you been in combat? Yes I have. Do you get claustrophobic? No, you can’t be to be on a submarine that is part of our physical test. Is it cold or warm in the submarine? It is very cold, about 45 degrees fahrenheit. Are there male and females on the submarine? There are only females on the Virginia Class and Ohio Class. What type of food do you guys eat? We usually go down with 90 days worth of food so we resurface with more food at 90 days. Which means, everything we eat down there is either canned or frozen. What’s the scariest thing that happened on deployment? Being away for 10 months. What do you do for fun or rec time? We play cards, video games, read, and sometimes we get a swim call. Have you ever gone head-to-head with another submarine? Yes I have, but that's about all I can tell you about it. Riana H. If you could pick one service job which would it be? I would probably be in the Air Force. Which service job do you think is the coolest? I think that the coolest job would be the Navy, because they have big boats. Do you know a service man or woman? If so who? Yes, my uncle is a submariner. If you could speak to a man/ woman in the military what would you say? I would say thank you. What is the scariest community service job? I think the scariest would be police. What did you think of meeting Emery? It was cool I didn’t know that much about the Navy but now I do. What is the most common service job? I think the most common would be firefighters. What would you say/do if you saw a service man/woman in public? I would not say anything because they would probably be working. What do you think about the living conditions on a submarine? I think it was cool. If you got a chance to go on the submarine and visit with Emery and the other crew would you? Yes, so I can learn more. Jayla F If you could pick one service job which would it be? I would pick the Marines. Which service job do you think is the coolest? I think the scariest job is an EMT because you have someone’s life in your hands. What did you think of meeting Emery? He seemed pretty cool. What is the most common service job? Do you have a family member that is a service men or women? Kashus: Yes my grandpa is the chief of police. Noelani: Yes my uncle is a firefighter. Kaimana: Yes my grandpa was in the Military. Jezzi: Yes my aunty. If you got to chose a service job what would it be and why? Kashus: I would like to be a police officer because of my grandpa. Noelani: I would be a cop. Kaimana: A police officer, becauseI would have to tell the law in any circumstances. Kaimana: They have to risk their live for us. Jezzi: Tbe in the army because they wear camo suits. Jezzi: I would be a Navy seal because we live in America and I want to be a doctor. What do you think is hard about being a service person? Kashus: Risking your life every day. Noelani: Being away from your family Why do you think it’s important to have service people in the community? Kashes: to help others in their area. Noelani: To make sure everyone is safe. Kaimana: It is important because we get to go to school. Jezzi: Make community proud. What roles do people service have in your community? Kashes: Some people are doctors. Noelani: Some people are cops,firefighters,or doctors. Kaimana: They protect us. Jezzi: Police officers.
