I am having a book drive for children at Kapiolani Medical Center on Oahu as my eighth-grade community service project. I love to read! Reading has helped me become a better student and a life long learner. It hurts me to realize many children and young adults don't have access to books they may be interested in or need. I hope, through my book drive, to comfort children that may find peace in the pages of a good book. Click the button below to learn more about how you can be involved! Before we go...Who's ready for Summer? The school year is coming to an end, and summer is right around the corner. Five days left and we are out. Are you ready? I am Harrison and this my partner Trevor. We are going to be talking about the end of the school and what some of our plans are for summer. We had an awesome school year. We made a few new friends along the way too. A few came from different parts of the world. Khoa came from Vietnam, Cheyenne and Caitlin also came in the middle of the year from the Philippines. Meeting new friends is always a joy. The school year had many fun activities for the 7th grade Hilo Trip, Boat Trip, and the Banquet. The Banquet was the most recent event. Masquerade was the theme of the banquet. We all helped set up with the tables, scrubbing the walls, bring materials, and more! Most of the middle schoolers came to the banquet and had a lot of fun. We had a dessert bar and pizza for food! The seniors played some awesome music and more than 75% of us danced. We had awards where their classmates voted on who gets what award. Overall the banquet was fun! The other activity we did was the boat trip to Molokini and Makena to snorkel. All of the middle school went on the “Ocean Discovery” which was the name of the boat. They gave us breakfast which was pineapples, oranges, and apple scones! It took us about an hour to get to Molokini and took us like 10 minutes for the boat to taxi into the area. When we were given the “go” to jump into the water everyone started having a lot of fun! People did backflips and frontflips off the side of the boat near the jump spot and other people snorkeled under the water to see all of the fish. There was a stingray and I dove under the water to swim with it. It was a lot of fun until I ran out of breath. When we were done they started cooking lunch while heading to Makena. Before we went to Makena we went behind Molokini and it was a rough and fun ride. It was like a mini rollercoaster! When we arrived we anchored down and went in. It was a lot deeper this time. It was 20 feet deep or more because when we jumped into the water the sea floor was really far down. The funniest part about this was when we were trying to find a turtle and the turtle accidently bumped into Jonathon, and he didn’t know what it was. We all yelled, “There’s a turtle there’s a turtle!” He replied “Where?! Where?!” Everyone started laughing at what happened (check out our comic this week) . This was probably the best trip we had in the middle school. Another trip that occurred this year was the 7th grade Hilo trip. The whole 7th went to Hilo to do lots of exploring and learning of the island of Hawaii. We got to go to the Kilauea Caldera at night and look at the lava glow from a distance. We went at night, so it was very cold. We even got to go to the Hilo zoo and we saw an albino tiger, along with many other cool animals. We slept in a military camp, and there were many activities to do there, like bowling, play games at the arcade, and more! We went on many hikes, and we even got to go on a hike in a lava tube. We went to Mauna Loa and saw all the people who made the chocolate covered macadamia nuts, and how the process is done. My favorite personal part of the trip was seeing the waterfall. The school year was very fun for all of us and we wish everyone who is leaving the middle school and joining the middle school a very fun time. There will be times where we will suffer from too much homework or boring class lectures, but if we do good we will be rewarded with fun activities. On behalf of the middle school, I wish you all a very awesome time in summer! Interviews:Do you have anything special planned for the summer? Lei Ana B.: I am going to do Paddling. Ari L.: I am mostly just going to hangout with Brody and Jayla. Mrs. R: I'm going to Australia How did you like this year at St. Anthony? Explain? LB: I liked it, all the teachers and students were so kind. Ari: Yes, it was very different then the grade school. Change is always good. R: I think the thing I liked about St. Anthony this year was the Boat trip. What did you do last summer? LB: I enjoyed going to California in the summer to meet up with my Grandparents. Ari: I went to California to meet up with family. R: I don't know but I'm sure it was fun. What is your favorite thing about summer? LB: No School Ari: Going to the beach with my Friends R: Having no agenda Are you excited for next year? LB: Yes, I am excited to see my friends again. Ari: Yes R: I will once July rolls around . What's your favorite thing about this semester? LB: Competing in track Ari: Brody Reformina R:The Boat Trip Are you going to continue to play sports in summer? LB: Yes, volley ball Ari: Yes, volleyball R: Run and swim Are you coming back next year? LB: Yes Ari: yes R: Yes What was your favorite thing about this year? LB: Spending time with my friends Ari: Spirit week R: The boat trip ComicThe highlights of the year! My name is Kali S. and I’m the reporter for this week. I will be covering some of the most exciting and fun events for this school year. Many students went to outer island trips like the STEM conference and Hilo trip for the seventh graders. We also had many on island events such as the Morey Challenge, homecoming, Song Fest, Lipsync, Halloween carnival, Mr. AJ’s middle school guidance entrepreneurship days, and numerous field trips. We also have many events coming up like our Masquerade Middle School Banquet, Molokini Trip, Band concert, and the step up ceremony for eighth graders. This year the seventh graders went to Hilo and learned about Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Hilo was very fun and action packed for everyone. Just very recently, many students went to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) conference on Oahu. It was very, very fun and we got many new opportunities and experiences. Mr.C, Mr.AJ, and many parents accompanied many sixth, seventh, and eighth graders on this trip. This year the sixth and eighth graders went to the courtroom, eighth grade went on a whale watch, and everyone participated in spirit and homecoming week. It was very interesting to learn about many different cases in the courtroom and a very fun trip on the whale watch. Spirit week and homecoming was absolutely crazy and so was our Halloween carnival. Mr.AJ’s students did amazing on their entrepreneurship days and many students enjoyed their delicious food and creative ideas. Many new things are coming our way and we are all excited about what's to come for us all. what are your thoughts?
Haylee: We did better than I thought! Mya: It was fun, and something new. Toa: I didn’t enjoy losing during Songfest, but we did very well in Lip Sync. Max: Songfest was kind of cringe to me. Devon: They were both very fun. Josh: I thought it was fun and I am excited to do it again next year. SpotlightJaden (8th grade)

Mahalo 8th Grade Sams Weekly Staff!A BIG thank you is in order to the 8th grade staff members at SAMS Weekly. This group worked very hard to produce news-worthy posts for you and the rest of the SAS 'Ohana to enjoy! I asked the student to reflect on their journey here at SAMS Weekly, and they reflected on the following questions:
Kaylee S.
Luke M.
Chamber Y.
Toa S. Honestly, I thought that journalism would be kind of boring. However, it was actually a good exploratory. I got to do a lot of jobs, maybe not all of them, but all of the ones I did were fun. I learned that if one job doesn’t meet the deadline it affects all the jobs. Meeting the deadline is important if you want the news to go up. Say I was photography, if I didn’t turn it in on time then the news letter won’t have pictures to go with the spotlight. Now I know that the deadline is important in all jobs. I enjoyed how easy and fun the jobs were. The best part of journalism was when we finished our jobs we got free time, and we didn’t have to worry about meeting deadlines I wouldn’t change much about journalism, but for my experience I should’ve been more responsible and on time. I didn’t turn in my permission sheet and I wandered a lot. So, I would’ve changed that. For the next group, don’t try to be sly with your phones. Ms. Shea catches us all the time. Kyshalee V. Before I took Journalism I thought it was going to be fun. My hypothesis was correct, It’s been a very fun six weeks.I thought that I would be basically writing/ typing the whole class but I was wrong. I never really knew how fun journalism was until I took it. I’ve learned a lot more about my fellow middle schoolers and what they do out of school. SAMS Weekly has truly proved how awesome the middle schoolers are.We all truly have something unique to share and i’m glad that I learned a little bit more about the people down here at the middle school. I mostly enjoyed photography where Kassidy and I adventure the campus taking pictures. I also loved helping with the bulletin board. Doing the board was fun because we truly put our creativity to work, and the result was amazing. I wouldn’t really want to change anything about SAMS Weekly. I understand that we can't fully take control of the website but in a way I wish we could. Maybe for photography we could use better cameras .It’s just a suggestion to take to mind because some of the ipods are very difficult to deal with (One of them turns off randomly). My advice for the next group is to take their job somewhat seriously because the other group is most likely trying their hardest and when the article doesn’t go up it’s a bummer for everyone else. My other advice to the other group is to turn in their permission slip in on time. Kassidy R. I though SAMS weekly was going to be boring. The other 8th graders didn't seem like they enjoyed it. But I was excited to have Ms. Shea for exploratory. I learned that it was actually fun in Journalism. Hanging out with Ms. Shea was fun because she plays good music. I learned more about some of the middle school students I interviewed. I like doing the bulletin board. I also learned to work with other people. I enjoyed walking around campus with Kysha taking pictures the most. It was nice to talk to some of the teachers. It was fun doing the bulletin board about trends with Elise. The bulletin board should be interesting every week and fun to look at. Whoever is reporter should write a better report. The comics should be more funny and creative. Overall the SAMS weekly website is interesting to look at. Khoa L.
Elise R. To be honest, I never even looked at the SAMS Weekly website before Journalism. I used to think it was just a way the school was trying to get students involved in activities. But now I think that SAMS Weekly is kind of cool. In Journalism, I learned that deadlines are so important, and also following the directions. Deadlines are ways to make sure that you are able to do your work and finish it on time. We had one week to complete our jobs, and if we didn’t do them, our part wouldn’t be in it at all. I enjoyed designing the week’s bulletin board the most because it put my creative abilities to work. I printed about 40 papers, but it was worth it. I like organizing and decorating, so it was perfect for me. I don’t think I want to change or improve anything about SAMS Weekly or Journalism. My experiences were okay and I had no problems at all. Some advice for the next group would be to turn their permission slips right away. We had a problem with them in our class, and we had to write sentences. Also to follow directions when they are given. Geste O. I thought journalism was going to really fun and interesting before starting it. I thought it was really cool that we all got to use SAMS Weekly and posting for the school. I was really excited nevertheless about starting journalism. I learned many things during journalism like working with friends and being responsible for your on job. I learned to be more responsible and to work harder during journalism on ideas. It also bring up my confidence in me since we were mostly asking other students questions. I learned more about teamwork and being a good friend. That is mostly all the things I learned in journalism. I enjoyed being with my friends during journalism the most. Going on the computer and helping each other out on our jobs. I also like that we got to go outside of the classroom to get our work done so It was really fun and enjoyable. I liked everything about journalism and I would love to do it again. I would like to improve on some of my jobs that I didn't really do good on or get to finish like making the bulletin board better and taking more pictures. I wouldn't really change any of the jobs because they're all very good and interesting. I wish I was a little more responsible about my work and that I did more in some of my jobs. That is all the things I wish I could improve on or change. Advice I would give to next journalism group is to be responsible about your jobs and make sure you get your work done first thing and not last minute. Also work well with your partner if you have a job with them even if you don't get along that well, getting along and working together better will make your job much easier. Even if you guys dont have the same idea figure a way that will work out for everyone in the group. Max M. Some of the work was fun, others were not. It was overall an interesting experience and one I would be fine in repeating later in school. I did not learn much in journalism. Much of the work is stuff I have done before. While it was fun, it was nothing new for me. I wished for more of a variety of choices when it came to jobs. I enjoyed almost all of it. The work was fun, and the climate was relaxed. I would be happy to repeat this experience if need be later in school. I rate the experience a 7/10 stars. I had only a few gripes with this class. I wanted more variety in the possible jobs to choose from. This would help avoid possible conflicts in the class. Good luck. Find the job you will like best, and try to do your best. Have fun during the class, because if you do, you will enjoy yourself very much. Therefore, try to comply with the teacher and do your jobs to your best ability. Staff members that we would like to thank, although did not meet reflection deadlines. Mahalo for your work! :)#trends What is a trend? A trend is a topic that develops in society, whether it’s makeup, dance, fashion, memes, etc. We have had many trends in the past from chokers to patched jeans. Topics become a trend usually through social media, such as Instagram and vine (R.I.P Vine). These trends develop through sharing posts. The more people to see the trend, the more people to follow. When people see other people following a trend they’ll think “Oh, this trend is popular”, and will feel the need to join. People who set these trends are called “trendsetters.” Trendsetters are usually celebrities. This is because they have the most twitter and Instagram followers. So, of course their fans would want to follow their role model. Kylie Jenner is actually one of the biggest trendsetters. She influenced others to enlarge their lips, which created the Kylie Jenner lip challenge. Kim Kardashian started the waist trainer trend on Instagram, posting pictures promoting the item. Later to come out is the Kylie Jenner Lip Kit that all the girls says they have to have. Miley Cyrus made a comeback starting the twerking craze. So, yes it’s true celebrities are one of the top influence on the young-lings. Today we have many trends. Starting from mixing videos and the all around highlight trend. People are beginning to make videos implying that your highlight needs to be brighter than the sun. Even men beauty gurus are taking over the beauty channels on Youtube. Yes, men doing makeup might be weird to us, but it is trending on Youtube starting with Jeffree Star. Trends can be made out of popular trends that existed back then, such as the choker, overalls, and winged eyeliner. These have been around for a while, but have come back to light these days. So, yes trends come and go but will always leave a piece of history in the fashion industry. Who knows? Maybe Vine will come back from the dead later in the future, and the Cam dab will once again be a dance craze. Spring Break- By Kyshalee V.Spring break is just around the corner for SAS students, and it’s a fun time for all of us! If you have any work to turn in please do so now for a worry free spring break. Other than turning in work, it’ll be about two weeks until the break. Technically your break will start on Saturday the 18th. Then you return on the 28th. That’s a good 10 days of break. Fun fact: 1.5 million students go on spring break and collectively spend over one billion dollars each year. That mostly includes shopping. The number one U.S. spring break place to go is Daytona Beach. The beach is located in Florida, so if you have the chance to go to Florida you should go visit the beach. If you need any ideas/suggestions on what to do during your time off, here is a list of things you could do. 1.Go to a friends house 2. Go to the mall 3. Spend time at the beach 4. The tv is always there 5. Sleepovers 6.Go do some DIY’s. The main purpose of this break is just to relax and enjoy. In conclusion of this article, I hope you all have a wonderful spring break and enjoy the time off. :) Spring Break- By Chamberlynn Y. Hey guys it's Chamber and i’m your reporter for this week, we're going to be talking about spring break. Spring break is coming up soon so, for all the people who don't know what to do for spring break here's some ideas. For spring break I like to go cruising or to the beach. Some beaches I like to go to is black rock, bigs, or cliff house. Also, maybe even going to the mall to go shopping or even watching a movie. The best thing about spring break to me is, I get to sleep in or even sleep all day. I get to spend more time with my family and friends. You don't have to worry about homework or waking up early. On spring break you can go traveling or take a tour around our beautiful island of Maui. Or, even join some programs that include activities for kids or families. Some beautiful places on Maui you could go to on spring break are, Lahaina, lavender garden in upcountry, Hana, Kahakuloa, and Haleakala. Lahaina has nice beaches, nice hotels, popular restaurants, and really nice sunsets. The lavender garden is a nice place that has great scents and scenery. Hana is a place where you can go and take a long drive with your friends and family and look at nice waterfalls. Kahakuloa is also a long drive but has beautiful views. Last but not least Haleakala, it’s very cold up there but has the prettiest sunsets or sunrises up there. Spring Break-By Max M.Hello all, My name is Max M. Homecoming 2017!Hey my name is Kassidy Star and this week we’ll be talking about homecoming. Homecoming was 2 weeks, February 13-24. Each day had a different dress up day. The actives we had were the following: Week one we had Songfest practice. Week 2 we had an activity towards the end of school like the Moray Challenge and a variety of rallies. During Homecoming we had a different schedule. It was Per 1, 2, assembly, recess, 3, 4, then activity or songfest practice. It was great to see the Middle School students showing their school spirit. I love seeing other students dressed up and in happy moods. For songfest our Middle School theme was “Disney”. Some of the Middle School students stayed after school to make props for songfest. Also the Middle School Student Government spent a lot of time on Songfest songs. 8th graders Kyshalee, Toa, Anjel, Elise, Tina, Luke, Kaylee, and myself helped create Songfest lyrics and planned out Lip Sync. We placed 1st for Lip Sync and 3rd for Songfest. We wouldn't have done a great job without our awesome Middle School teachers. One activity we did was called the Moray Challenge and it was different water challenges/activities. There was a long slip n slide, a climb up and water slide down thing, and a big ball. It was really fun having the whole school come together and have fun. We also had a “water” rally where we played activities including water.
